Harry Potter HBO series casts Sorting Hat voice alongside castle ghosts
Five supernatural roles just joined the upcoming HBO adaptation, but the sudden reveal leaves one beloved Hogwarts founder house without a spirit.
HBO officially unveiled five key cast members on Friday, October 30, for the first season of its upcoming Harry Potter television series, led by British actor David Threlfall as the voice of the Sorting Hat.
The network confirmed the additions in an Instagram post from the official HBO Max account with the caption, “Who haunts these halls?” Outlets including Variety, TheWrap, and Deadline reported the rollout, which introduces several of the most recognizable supernatural residents of Hogwarts castle.
The new ghosts and portraits
Alongside Threlfall, HBO revealed the actors stepping into the spectral roles of three Hogwarts house ghosts. Leo Bill will portray Gryffindor house ghost Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, widely known as Nearly Headless Nick. Andrew Brooke joins as the Slytherin house ghost, the Bloody Baron, while Daniel Fearn takes on Hufflepuff resident spirit, the Fat Friar.
The announcement also filled the portrait frame guarding Gryffindor Tower, naming comedian Laura Smyth as The Fat Lady, the moving portrait guarding Gryffindor Tower.
How the cast compares to the original films
The new television roster steps into parts previously defined by British actors during the original feature film franchise. The Sorting Hat was originally voiced by Leslie Phillips, while John Cleese portrayed Nearly Headless Nick.
In the film series, Terence Bayler portrayed the Bloody Baron, Simon Fisher-Becker played the Fat Friar, and the Fat Lady was portrayed by Elizabeth Spriggs and later Dawn French. The television series offers a fresh adaptation of the books across long-form seasons.
What we know about the production
The first season of the television series adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The season is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
Threlfall and the ghost cast join young leads Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, with John Lithgow starring as Albus Dumbledore. Production is already underway for Season 2, adapting Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which is filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the United Kingdom.
Fan reaction and what remains unknown
Fan discussions across social media and Reddit welcomed the casting news on Friday, though readers noted that only three of the four Hogwarts house ghosts were announced. The absence of Ravenclaw ghost Helena Ravenclaw, also known as the Grey Lady, quickly sparked discussion among fans.
It remains unconfirmed whether David Threlfall’s portrayal of the Sorting Hat is voice-only or includes facial motion capture, according to Aguamenti News. HBO has also not confirmed whether the series will feature the Sorting Hat singing its traditional sorting songs from the novels, or whether the Grey Lady will appear in Season 1 or be introduced in a future season.
