Actor and screenwriter Walter Koenig, famous for originating the role of Ensign Pavel Chekov in the classic sci-fi franchise Star Trek, died on Sunday night, October 25, 2026. He was 90 years old.

Koenig passed away from natural causes at his home in North Hollywood, California, with his daughter Danielle and his niece at his side. His agent, Zachery McGinnis, founder of Galactic Productions, confirmed the news alongside Koenig’s representative on October 26, as reported by The Guardian, CNN, and ABC News.

“Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world,” McGinnis said in a statement shared by Galactic Productions on Facebook.

William Shatner honors Koenig’s bond with fans

Former co-star William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, paid tribute to Koenig on October 27 in a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly and published on Instagram.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing,” Shatner said. “Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed.”

Shatner went on to reflect on Koenig’s deep affection for science fiction enthusiasts across decades of fan gatherings.

“What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community,” Shatner wrote. “At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades. That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him. My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.”

George Takei remembers a 60-year friendship

George Takei, who manned the Enterprise helm as Hikaru Sulu, announced Koenig’s passing on social media on October 26 and shared a photograph of the two longtime friends.

“My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today,” Takei posted on Instagram. “Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.”

Takei added: “Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.”

Tributes also arrived from other franchise alumni. Kim Cattrall, who played Lieutenant Valeris in the 1991 film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, shared her own memory on Instagram: “Rest well dear Walter. It was a pleasure sharing the bridge with you.”

From the Enterprise bridge to Babylon 5

Koenig was born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, and celebrated his 90th birthday on September 14, 2026. He joined the original Star Trek television series in 1967 for its second season, portraying Russian navigator Pavel Chekov across 36 episodes until the show finished in 1969.

He went on to reprise Chekov across the big screen, appearing in the first seven Paramount feature films from Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 through 1994’s Star Trek Generations. Decades later, he returned to the franchise by voicing Anton Chekov in a 2023 episode of Star Trek: Picard.

Beyond the bridge of the Enterprise, Koenig made an indelible mark on 1990s science fiction television with his recurring performance as Psi Cop Alfred Bester in Babylon 5.

Koenig was married to actress Judy Levitt from 1965 until her death in December 2022. Their son, actor Andrew Koenig, died in 2010. Details regarding upcoming memorial or funeral services have not yet been announced.
