Noah Wyle was named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2026 on Tuesday, October 27, admitting he could hardly believe the news when the call arrived. The magazine revealed the cover featuring the actor in an all-denim portrait shot by photographer Jeff Lipsky, bearing the medical-themed headline, “No Second Opinion Needed.”

The announcement went public on Tuesday morning when comedian Amy Poehler unveiled the issue cover on her podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, welcoming Wyle as her guest. Poehler, who shared her excitement during the episode, called herself a longtime fan of NBC’s hospital drama ER, the series that first introduced Wyle to international audiences.

Coverage of the selection was reported by outlets including Hindustan Times, WCNC and ComicBasics, highlighting Wyle’s medical drama career and his humorous response to joining the decades-long roster of honorees.

Thinking it was a prank

When People informed Wyle about the accolade, his initial instinct was suspicion. He told the magazine that the news sounded like a prank, admitting that not in a million years did he expect such an honor to be bestowed on him.

Wyle also joked about the ribbing he expects from his closest circle. “I hope this changes everything. I hope it’s just wine and roses, milk and honey from here on out. [Laughs] No, I don’t, but I am going to take a lot of ribbing from friends and family for sure.”

His wife, Sara Wells Wyle, had a warmer reaction to the selection. Describing her response to the news, Wyle said, “She was very pleased that this reflects well on her taste. She thinks I’m a good guy and that the kind of person that I am and the kind of father I am, the kind of husband I am, is worth promoting. I thought, ‘Okay, if you say so.’ “

Following in George Clooney’s footsteps

Wyle first became a household name playing Dr. John Carter on ER, which debuted in 1994 and spanned 15 seasons. That history puts him in familiar company alongside former co-star George Clooney, who earned the Sexiest Man Alive crown twice, in 1997 and 2006.

Speaking to People, Wyle imagined how his former castmate might react to his new title. “I think he’ll be amused and feel, hopefully, like a proud papa, that I’ve come of gray-haired age,” Wyle said, though Clooney has not released an official public comment or congratulatory statement.

Wyle joins an elite group of recent titleholders that includes Jonathan Bailey in 2025, John Krasinski in 2024, and Patrick Dempsey in 2023. The franchise was originally founded by the magazine in 1985, when Mel Gibson was chosen as the inaugural honoree.

A massive year on screen

The honor caps off a celebrated run for the actor, who currently leads the medical drama The Pitt as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. For that performance, Wyle took home a Golden Globe in 2026 and won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026.

Ahead of Tuesday’s announcement, social media users and prediction market bettors engaged in debate over the title, with some discussing whether his The Pitt co-star Shawn Hatosy should have won, as reported by Head Topics and Bored Panda.

Even with the title officially in hand, Wyle admitted that stepping into the spotlight as himself remains an adjustment. “I was so hoping today was going to be the day. ‘Look at you. You’re the Sexiest Man Alive. Finally you can be comfortable in your own skin.’ Not yet. I like being in other people’s skin. I like putting on characters. I get self-conscious. It’s still the hardest kind of interaction for me, speaking without a script as myself,” he told People.

People has not yet released the full roster of names featured inside the issue ahead of its arrival on newsstands.
