Jay-Z Super Bowl 2027 halftime show headliner role ends a backstage era
A long-standing NFL agreement and a private request from Roger Goodell finally put the Roc Nation founder under the stadium lights.
Jay-Z will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, February 14, 2027. The NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation confirmed the booking late Monday night, October 26, during the Monday Night Football broadcast on ESPN and ABC, as well as on NFL.com.
The announcement, also reported by People and Rolling Stone, marks the first time the rapper and entertainment mogul will take center stage himself after years of guiding the event from behind the scenes.
From producer to performer
Roc Nation entered into a partnership with the NFL in 2019 to serve as the league’s entertainment advisor and co-produce the halftime show. That contract was extended for five additional years in 2024, keeping the company at the helm through 2029.
Since the partnership began, Roc Nation has curated lineups that featured the West Coast hip-hop showcase led by Dr. Dre at SoFi Stadium for Super Bowl LVI in 2022, Rihanna in 2023, Usher in 2024, Kendrick Lamar in 2025, and Bad Bunny for Super Bowl LX in 2026.
According to an NFL press release, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that having the rapper perform was a goal from the very beginning of their working relationship.
“For several years, we’ve had the privilege of working closely with JAŸ-Z and Roc Nation, and I’ve seen the extraordinary impact he has had on the Super Bowl Halftime Show. When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that JAŸ-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him,” Goodell said.
Thirty years of music
Jay-Z addressed the milestone in the announcement, looking back across three decades of his career in music.
“From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey. Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true,” Jay-Z said in the release.
The announcement follows a milestone year for the artist. In 2026, Jay-Z marked the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of his 2001 album The Blueprint with a stadium tour, concluding with back-to-back concerts at SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24.
Oliver Schusser, Apple’s Vice President of Music and International Content, praised the headliner in an official statement, noting: “JAŸ-Z’s impact on global music culture is as profound as it is undeniable.”
What fans are watching for
The 2027 halftime show will be executive produced by Roc Nation, with Hamish Hamilton serving as director. Super Bowl LXI will air across ESPN, ABC, and Disney+, with mobile streaming on NFL+ and Spanish-language coverage on ESPN Deportes, Disney+, and Univision.
Following the news, fans online expressed excitement and began widespread speculation that Jay-Z’s wife, Beyoncé, would make an appearance. Beyoncé previously headlined the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show in 2013 and performed as a guest during Super Bowl 50 in 2016, though organizers have not confirmed any guest performers.
An unconfirmed report from Puck News, cited by The Independent and Hypebeast, claimed Jay-Z selected himself over potential contenders Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, though that claim has not been verified by the league or organizers.
For now, the official setlist, staging concepts, and potential guest lineup remain under wraps as preparations begin for the 2027 performance.
