Ryan Gosling Dead Man’s Bones reunion leaves a major release mystery
A cryptic video confirmed the October launch date, yet listeners still do not know if the duo is dropping a single, a full album, or a tour.
Ryan Gosling and collaborator Zach Shields are officially bringing back their gothic indie-rock project Dead Man’s Bones, announcing that new music will arrive on October 27, 2026. The release marks the cult duo’s first new musical project in 17 years, confirmed in a report by Billboard.
The band unveiled the comeback on October 22 with an eerie video teaser uploaded to their YouTube channel and official Instagram account. The clip features a floating face inside a spiral reciting a dark poem: “Dead man’s bones must wait to rise, from the house where shadows cry. All of this must change, when our ghosts must leave our world for this, to dance with us at twilight time, and bring your hand to lie in mine.” At the close of the poem, a young girl’s voice cuts in to announce the date “October 27.”
How the return was summoned
Independent label ANTI- Records, which handled the group’s debut LP, also published the teaser video. The reveal followed hints posted earlier that day by Gosling’s partner, Eva Mendes, who took to Instagram to rally interest in the band.
“Sure wish they had new music coming out…” Mendes wrote in one post, followed by, “Trying to summon new music from DEAD MAN’S BONES. I can feel it in the air….” Once the official teaser went live, Mendes shared the clip directly to her feed, writing, “He came through on his promise to me.” Mark Avery, stylist to Gosling and Mendes, also dropped hints referencing “Dead Man’s Bones on Halloween” ahead of the official announcement.
Devoted listeners quickly flooded social media with excitement. Fan comments highlighted by WION included reactions such as “This is EPIC and long overdue” and “I literally have your song tattooed on me. I can’t wait.”
A Halloween cult favorite born from ghost stories
Gosling and Shields formed Dead Man’s Bones in 2007 after bonding over ghost stories and a shared fascination with Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride. On October 6, 2009, the duo released their self-titled debut album on ANTI- Records, teaming up with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir to deliver a haunting, cemetery-pop sound.
Over the years, the record grew into an autumn staple, and several tracks made their way into horror film and television soundtracks. The song “In the Room Where You Sleep” memorably soundtracked a scene in the 2013 horror hit The Conjuring, while “Lose Your Soul” was featured in the first season of The Boroughs in 2026.
While Dead Man’s Bones stayed quiet for nearly two decades, Gosling never stopped performing music on screen. He sang throughout the 2016 musical La La Land and scored major chart and awards success with “I’m Just Ken” from the 2023 movie Barbie, which earned him Oscar and Grammy nominations and culminated in a live performance at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony in March 2024.
What we know and what remains a mystery
While the date of October 27 is confirmed, the band has not yet revealed whether the upcoming release is a standalone single, an EP, or a full-length studio album. It also remains unknown whether Dead Man’s Bones will play any live concerts or embark on a tour following the drop.
Online communities have floated “Hypnotism” as a potential track title, while outlets including Music-News and NewsBytes noted speculation over whether the young girl heard shouting the release date in the video belongs to Gosling and Mendes. Neither detail has been verified by the band or their label, and the full tracklist and featured guest musicians remain under wraps.
