English comedian James Acaster has spoken out about his banishment from BBC One’s The Celebrity Traitors, explaining why he openly confessed his identity at the round table during the October 29 penultimate episode. His admission followed suspicion from actor Michael Sheen over the “murder in plain sight” of Ross Kemp, prompting a unanimous vote that eliminated Acaster and left seven finalists in the castle.

During the broadcast, Acaster addressed host Claudia Winkleman and his co-stars directly. “When I came into this experience I told Claudia (Winkleman) that all I wanted to be was a faithful, and all I wanted to do is go around this castle and try and help the faithfuls as much as possible catching traitors. I’m really proud to say that’s what I’ve been able to do, under the circumstances. I am, reluctantly, a traitor,” Acaster said, as reported by The Independent.

The mental strain of playing a Traitor

Acaster, who began the series as a Faithful before being recruited into the Traitors’ turret in episode 2, expanded on his mindset during an appearance on the spin-off show The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked and in post-elimination exit interviews. He explained that planning to give himself up if trapped was the only coping mechanism that kept him going.

“The idea of doing that got me through the whole experience because you feel as a Traitor sometimes, when you see people have real life reactions that are bigger than the game, you feel bad, and I would have to remind myself they don’t have a game without you, literally, if no one’s doing this stuff, they can’t play, and they all want to play. So you are doing an important job here, so they all have something to do, and when they catch you, they’ll be really happy and they’ll like it, and it will feel good to just tell them and see that reaction,” Acaster told LADbible.

Acaster also reflected on his reluctance to play the deceitful role. As reported by the Largs and Millport Weekly News, he told the round table: “I just want to explain my situation. I was made a traitor without wanting to be. I’ve had a unique experience on this that no-one’s had before, where I wanted to be a faithful and that’s all I’ve wanted to be.” He added: “I couldn’t just go, ‘guys it’s me, vote for me’, but that’s all I can do really.”

Unconfirmed reports of paused filming

Acaster’s confession arrived alongside unconfirmed reports regarding behind-the-scenes tension. An unnamed source told The Sun, in remarks syndicated by WalesOnline, that production briefly stopped during the round table.

“What you don’t see is the moment when James got upset as he crumbled when he could see he was about to be caught. Both the producers and the other celebrities could see how he was struggling with the pressure of keeping his true identity secret and he reached some kind of breaking point when he was confronted,” the source claimed. The source added: “That saw the team feel compelled to intervene, and filming was brought to a halt as they assessed the situation. They spoke to both James and the rest of the stars and didn’t allow filming to resume until they were sure everyone was in a fit state.”

These claims of a production halt and welfare intervention remain unconfirmed. Neither the BBC nor production company Studio Lambert has confirmed the alleged pause, and it remains unknown how much footage was trimmed before broadcast.

Fallout ahead of the grand final

Acaster became the second player this series to openly admit being a Traitor, following Richard E. Grant in episode 1. Co-star Leigh-Anne Pinnock noted that “no one saw that coming,” while Nick Mohammed described Acaster’s admission as moving and emotional on The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked.

For fellow Traitors Maya Jama and King Kenny, the exit reshapes the castle ahead of the grand final. Jama called the banishment the “hardest day” of the series, according to the Daily Record.

Acaster believes his departure sets up an unpredictable ending. “Now we’ve got a proper final on our hands. With three Traitors, it would have been a foregone conclusion that we were going to win. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was hilarious at one point that we were just going to walk our way to the final and win the whole thing, but this is much better, isn’t it?” he said on The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked.
