Tate McRae Housewife new single video revives an Easter egg fans missed
The Canadian star filmed her 2026 return in the south of France after planting a subtle clue during a festival set that went completely unnoticed.
Tate McRae is officially back with new music. The Canadian singer-songwriter and dancer released her new single “Housewife” alongside its official music video via RCA Records on Thursday, October 15, marking her first new music release of 2026.
The release arrived just in time for New Music Friday, as reported by Billboard. The visual, directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti, features elaborate choreography from Sergio Reis and was filmed on location in the south of France.
McRae first announced the track on Instagram on October 7, sharing the single’s cover art, which features the pop star in sunglasses and a red bikini posing beside a stroller packed with stacks of cash, captioned simply: “Housewife. Out 10.15”
Behind the song and visual
The song was written by McRae alongside a heavyweight pop team, including Julia Michaels, Ryan Tedder, Grant Boutin, Aaron Shadrow, and El Guincho (Pablo Diaz-Reixa).
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 7, McRae opened up about the story behind the track, telling the host: “It’s kind of about a woman who can’t be contained.”
She also highlighted the overseas production behind the video, telling Fallon that they filmed in the south of France and describing the shoot as magical.
The clue fans missed
While the formal rollout began in October, McRae revealed that she had hidden the title in plain sight months earlier during her headline set at Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 2, 2026, where the word “Housewife” appeared on-screen as an Easter egg.
“My fans in particular, we drop Easter eggs all the time, and they get none of them. They’ll always catch on to things that are completely wrong,” McRae joked to Fallon. “This was literally in my Lolla set, when the set started. And that was three months ago.”
The song follows a massive run of commercial success for McRae, whose third studio album, So Close to What, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in March 2025. She earned her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 later that spring with the Morgan Wallen collaboration “What I Want” and took home the Hitmaker Award at the 2026 Billboard Women in Music ceremony. Ahead of the new release, McRae also reflected on high-profile support from Taylor Swift, who previously appeared on Fallon and praised McRae’s 2025 single “Tit for Tat” as a standout track.
What comes next
McRae is scheduled to take the new material straight to the stage on Sunday, October 18, 2026, when she performs at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Los Angeles, according to reports from Billboard and Just Jared. Victoria’s Secret celebrated the rollout on Instagram, as highlighted by Rolling Stone, commenting on McRae’s teaser image: “We have a feeling this is going to be the best October yet.”
What remains unconfirmed is whether “Housewife” serves as the official lead single for a fourth studio album. Speculation has circulated across music blogs and Genius, but RCA Records has not yet confirmed an upcoming album title, tracklist, or release date, and details regarding her staging for the Los Angeles fashion show remain under wraps.
