Celine Dion Barbie doll from the 1998 Oscars arrives to divided reactions
Mattel recreated the singer's iconic blue gown and Heart of the Ocean necklace, yet collectors are calling out one key feature of the tribute.
Mattel has unveiled a collectible Barbie Signature doll honoring Canadian singer Celine Dion, recreating her appearance from the 70th Academy Awards in 1998. The toy company announced the release on October 14, 2026, offering collectors a miniature tribute to the music icon as she appeared when performing the Oscar-winning ballad “My Heart Will Go On.”
The Black Label collectible, sculpted on a Model Muse body by doll designer Suim Noh and packaging designer Laydiana Chiv, replicates Dion’s red carpet and stage styling from the ceremony. The doll wears an ocean-blue floor-length turtleneck gown with long sleeves, paired with silver earrings. Around her neck rests a recreation of the fictional “Heart of the Ocean” (“La Coeur de la Mer”) pendant from the 1997 movie Titanic.
Pre-orders launched on the Mattel Creations website on October 14, 2026, initially opening to Barbie Club 59 members before expanding to the general public. The doll is priced at $69.99 USD ($90 CAD on Mattel’s Canadian portal), with an estimated shipping date on or before December 31, 2026. Social media announcements from the brand noted that the collectible is both limited and legendary.
What Celine Dion said
Dion reflected on the tribute in a statement released through Mattel, calling the doll a meaningful milestone.
“It is a true honour to join the Barbie legacy with a doll inspired by one of the most meaningful moments of my career,” Dion said.
The singer also shared a message for collectors and fans: “I hope this doll inspires everyone to express themselves with confidence, follow their dreams and believe in the power of their own voice.”
Divided fan reactions
The release quickly drew mixed reactions online over the doll’s physical likeness and styling, as reported by HELLO! Magazine and Parade.
Some social media users felt the sculpt missed the mark, posting comments such as “So sorry but she doesn’t look like our Céline”, “The face… I don’t know”, “That is not Céline”, and “The gown the hair it’s all wrong @mattel”.
Other fans expressed delight with the doll, praising it with comments like “She is style she is grace”. Visitors at Montreal’s Barbie Expo also called the collectible tribute well deserved and accurate.
A landmark career moment
The design looks back to March 23, 1998, when Dion took the stage at the 70th Academy Awards to perform “My Heart Will Go On.” Written by James Horner and Will Jennings, the track won the Oscar for Best Original Song later that evening.
The tribute places Dion alongside other music icons previously featured in Mattel’s Barbie Signature line, including Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Stevie Nicks, and Mariah Carey.
The release comes amid Dion’s ongoing return to music. After announcing in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome and pausing live performances, she sang at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony and launched a concert residency near Paris in September 2026.
Mattel has not disclosed the total number of dolls produced for the limited run, nor is it publicly known how much personal involvement Dion had in reviewing the sculpt during the design process.
