Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan released their collaborative remix of “Expectations” on Thursday, October 15, via Interscope Records at 8:00 p.m. ET, accompanied by a retro television-style music video featuring Talking Heads frontman David Byrne.

Directed by Bardia Zeinali, the visual sets Rodrigo and Roan against each other as contestants on a retro 1970s television game show titled “The Big Expectations Show.” According to Variety and Consequence, the video features segments inspired by vintage programs such as “Family Feud” and “Hollywood Squares,” with Byrne starring as game show host Johnny Johnson. Record producer Dan Nigro, who produced both the remix and the original track, also makes a cameo appearance holding an oversized 1990s mobile phone.

The release marks Roan’s first-ever guest feature on another artist’s song. For the duet, Roan contributes a new verse replacing Rodrigo’s original second verse with lyrics recounting a disappointing romantic date in Los Angeles. In addition to streaming platforms, the remix was released across limited-edition physical formats, including an “LA behavior” translucent blue 7-inch vinyl, cassette, and CD on Rodrigo’s official store.

What the artists said about the release

Fans circulated and praised the collaboration across social platforms following an audio snippet Rodrigo shared on her Instagram Story on October 12, 2026, where Roan could be heard saying, “Ooh, Olivia does remixes now.” Rodrigo officially announced the drop the following day on social media.

“beyond excited to announce “expectations” featuring Chappell Roan!!! song and video out Thursday!!!!” Rodrigo wrote in an Instagram post on October 13.

Speaking to Apple Music, as reported via Just Jared, Roan addressed her decision to join the track: “This is obviously my first feature. I’ve never done this before, so it feels perfect to me. I don’t know. I feel like it represents a generation of songwriters that are just really thinking about their lyrics.”

A creative partnership built over years

The collaboration highlights a creative bond that predates Roan’s mainstream breakthrough. Roan previously opened for Rodrigo on select tour dates of the Sour Tour in 2022 and on the first 24 dates of the Guts World Tour in 2024. Both artists also share Nigro as their main producer.

Roan also performed at Rodrigo’s inaugural women-led charity festival, Daisy Chain Fields, on August 29, 2026, at Great Park in Irvine, California, which raised $20 million for 10 non-profit organizations supporting women and girls.

Byrne’s appearance in the visual follows a prior joint release between the artists. On April 3, 2026, Byrne and Rodrigo released a joint vinyl project where Byrne covered Rodrigo’s song “drivers license” and Rodrigo covered Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House.”

The original version of “Expectations” was released on June 12, 2026, as the twelfth track on Rodrigo’s third studio album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love”, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 album-equivalent units.

What we do not know yet

It remains unconfirmed whether Rodrigo and Roan will perform the remix together live during Rodrigo’s Unraveled Tour or at Roan’s upcoming Super Graphic Spectacular charity fundraiser on October 21 and 22, 2026.
