Olivia Rodrigo’s Cynthia Nixon Christmas song sparked hype and pushback
The pop star paired up with the Sex and the City actress for a seasonal release, but past political statements soon stirred online debate.
Olivia Rodrigo released her first-ever original holiday single, “take me home (4 christmas),” via Interscope Records on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. ET. The seasonal release arrived alongside an official music video featuring Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon and Saturday Night Live cast member Ben Marshall.
Rodrigo announced the project on Instagram earlier in the week, writing to followers: “my first Christmas song “take me home (4 christmas)” is out this Thursday at 5 pm pt/ 8 pm ET!! you can preorder it now. im so excited!!!🎅🏼❤️”
The track was written by Rodrigo alongside frequent songwriting collaborators Dan Nigro and Amy Allen, with Nigro handling production. According to the product description on Rodrigo’s official store, the song explores “the excitement and nerves of spending the holidays with someone you love”.
A holiday parlor game
Before the song’s premiere, a promotional teaser posted to social media previewed the music video’s lighthearted setting. In the clip, Nixon, Marshall, and other guests play a festive party guessing game while wearing crowns bearing Rodrigo’s name.
During the game, Marshall asks his fellow partygoers, “Am I smaller than a breadbox”
Nixon follows up with rapid questions of her own, asking, “Am I living? Am I a president? Am I in the arts?”
Physical editions of the single were made available for pre-order on Rodrigo’s official store on November 2, including an exclusive 7-inch red vinyl and a red cassette. Both formats feature a B-side track titled “miss this christmas.” Copies of the 7-inch vinyl will reach Target retail stores on Friday, November 6.
Reactions and fan theories
As reported by Geo News, fans online reacted enthusiastically to the holiday teaser, quickly sharing theories about whether Rodrigo might release a full Christmas album, an EP, or an HBO Max holiday special. None of those potential projects have been confirmed.
The joint project also drew criticism in some circles. As reported by Roya News, the announcement prompted calls for boycotts from some social media users due to previous public statements regarding Gaza and Palestine made by both Rodrigo and Nixon.
A busy year for Rodrigo
The festive release comes in the middle of an active period for the pop star. Rodrigo released her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, in June 2026. On October 15, she followed up with a remix of her track “expectations” featuring Chappell Roan, accompanied by a music video co-starring musician David Byrne.
Rodrigo is currently traveling on The Unraveled Tour, which is scheduled to run through May 2027. In December 2026, she is slated to receive the Songwriter of the Year Award at Variety’s 10th annual Hitmakers event in Los Angeles.
It remains unconfirmed whether Rodrigo intends to perform “take me home (4 christmas)” live during upcoming tour stops or on any upcoming televised holiday broadcasts.
