Bob Dylan made an unexpected stop at the Apostolic Palace on Wednesday, November 4, meeting privately with Pope Leo XIV while taking a break from his tour across Italy. The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano confirmed the encounter, noting that the pontiff “received in private audience Mr. Robert Allen Zimmerman”, referring to the music legend by his legal birth name.

The audience brought together two prominent Americans in Rome. Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, became the first American-born pope in history following his election in May 2025. Dylan paused his current concert schedule ahead of a planned performance at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome on November 5, with upcoming tour dates scheduled in Milan and Bologna, according to Euronews.

A hoodie at the Apostolic Palace

The visual contrast between the two men quickly caught the attention of observers. As reported by The Washington Post, Dylan arrived wearing a casual black hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled up over his head, paired with a dark coat, dark trousers, a loosely knotted scarf, and black gloves, which he removed to shake hands. Pope Leo XIV met him dressed in his traditional white cassock and papal vestments.

Online observers and fans highlighted the visual contrast between Dylan’s hooded look and the pontiff’s formal papal dress, noting that Dylan kept his signature touring wardrobe even in the Apostolic Palace, The Washington Post reported.

Signed memoirs and shared history

Vatican News confirmed that the brief meeting included lighthearted conversation and an exchange of gifts. Pope Leo XIV presented Dylan with a rosary, while the singer-songwriter gave the pontiff a signed copy of his 2004 autobiography, Chronicles: Volume One.

The meeting was arranged by Rev. Antonio Spadaro, an official in the Vatican culture ministry, alongside Andrea Monda, the editor of L’Osservatore Romano. Rev. Spadaro reflected on the gathering in a post on Instagram.

“It was hard not to feel the emotion of being part of an encounter that had a real sense of history about it, with the feeling that, at every step through the Apostolic Palace, absolutely anything could happen!” Rev. Spadaro wrote.

Rev. Spadaro also noted in L’Osservatore Romano that Dylan wrote the track “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” for his 1967 album John Wesley Harding. The song refers to St. Augustine of Hippo, the founder of the religious order to which Pope Leo XIV belongs.

A long connection to the papacy

Wednesday’s audience is not Dylan’s first encounter with the Vatican. In September 1997, Dylan met Pope John Paul II and performed “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”, “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” at the World Eucharistic Congress in Bologna, Italy.

Pope Leo XIV has also previously displayed an appreciation for Dylan’s catalog. In July 2026, the pontiff quoted Dylan’s unpublished 1963 anti-nuclear protest song “Go Away You Bomb” in the preface to his book Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift, published by the Vatican Publishing House.

Pope Leo XIV has welcomed several prominent music artists to the Vatican in 2026, hosting Bad Bunny in June and Patti Smith in July.

The Vatican did not release a transcript of the private conversation between Dylan and the pope, and Dylan did not issue an immediate public statement following the visit.
