Martha Stewart addressed public backlash on Sunday, November 1, after deleting an Instagram photo that showed her dressed in tattered clothing as an impoverished beggar for Halloween. The lifestyle mogul explained in a public statement that she felt distressed by accusations that she mocked poverty, maintaining that the outfit was meant to draw attention to food insecurity and homelessness.

The controversy began on October 31, when Stewart shared an image of herself wearing oversized, tattered clothes with dirt smeared across her face. In the photo, she held a clipboard displaying the message “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” as part of a promotional carousel for her QVC candle collection, which carried the caption: “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!” Following immediate pushback from followers, Stewart deleted the post from her account, according to reports from TMZ and Us Weekly.

The backlash from critics

Critics across social platforms quickly condemned the concept, arguing that turning real-world poverty into a holiday costume was inherently distasteful. Observers pointed out the stark contrast between the outfit and Stewart’s position as an 85-year-old businesswoman with an estimated net worth of $400 million, viewing the pairing of a beggar costume with a commercial product pitch as deeply out of touch.

On Reddit and X, commenters criticized the image as “out of touch,” “callous,” and “tone deaf,” as reported by The Mirror US and The Daily Beast. Specific reactions included users writing “The level of out of touch is stellar,” “Rich people never cease to amaze me with their callousness,” “Speechless,” and “Read the room Martha- people are struggling out here.”

Stewart explains her intention

In a statement released on November 1 to outlets including TMZ, Page Six, and The Daily Beast, Stewart defended her intentions while expressing regret that the imagery had caused offense. She noted that she has spent decades sharing holiday crafts, recipes, and hosting advice, but wanted this year’s attire to touch on a wider crisis.

“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” Stewart said in the statement.

She added: “Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic.”

What we know and what remains unclear

Stewart has a long history of participating in elaborate holiday celebrations, such as dressing up as “Fairy GrandMartha” alongside Kenan Thompson on television in 2013. However, this year’s social media presentation raised unresolved questions regarding how the post came together.

It remains unknown which specific charitable initiatives or hunger relief organizations Stewart intended to highlight with the costume, as none were tagged or named in the original post. It is also unclear whether the costume concept originated with Stewart directly or was developed alongside her commercial marketing and social media teams.

The situation highlights an ongoing debate over public figures addressing social issues: can positive charitable intent excuse an execution that many find offensive, or should the real-world impact always matter more? Which side are you on?
