Michael Mann hospitalized after gun range accident as Heat 2 looms
The Oscar-nominated director required emergency treatment after a training mishap, raising questions about his upcoming film schedule.
Director Michael Mann was transported to a local hospital on Saturday afternoon after sustaining an accidental gunshot wound to his leg at an indoor facility in Los Angeles, authorities and his team confirmed on Sunday, November 1.
The Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles Police Department responded to The Range LA around 4:00 p.m. following reports of the incident, according to reporting from TMZ. Emergency personnel took the filmmaker by ambulance to a nearby medical center for treatment.
What happened at the range
Authorities confirmed that Mann had no intention of harming himself and determined that the shooting was a training accident resulting from an accidental discharge.
His spokesperson confirmed the incident in a statement to AP News and TMZ, noting that the injury was minor.
“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released.”
While his representative stated that the weapon discharged while holstered, initial law enforcement accounts given to TMZ indicated that the discharge may have happened as the firearm was being re-holstered. The specific make and caliber of the firearm have not been disclosed.
A background in tactical realism
Mann, who was born in 1943, has been an experienced target shooter for decades. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker is celebrated across the industry for bringing rigorous firearms training and authentic weapon handling to his film sets.
His celebrated filmography includes crime dramas such as “Thief” (1981), “Heat” (1995), and “Collateral” (2004), alongside “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992), “The Insider” (1999), and “Ferrari” (2023).
Mann has recently been working in pre-production on a feature film adaptation of his novel “Heat 2”, which he co-wrote with author Meg Gardiner and published in 2022. It is not yet known whether his recovery will cause any changes to the project’s development schedule.
