Neve Campbell has officially confirmed that she will return as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming horror sequel Scream 8, making the announcement on the red carpet in London on Monday, November 2.

Speaking with the Associated Press during the premiere of season 2 of the Netflix espionage drama series Black Doves, in which she co-stars, the Canadian actress confirmed that the next installment of the long-running slasher franchise is firmly underway.

“I’ve got two shows I’m developing, one I’ve sold. ‘Scream 8’ you know, that’s in the pipeline as well,” Campbell said. When asked about potential plot details, she kept the storyline under wraps, adding: “You know I can never tell you anything about ‘Scream 8’… I’ll be in it.”

New writers and a producer shift

The upcoming film is currently in active development under Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures, as reported by Variety. Screenwriting duo Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman, who previously served as showrunners on the first season of Poker Face in 2023, have been tapped to write the script.

Kevin Williamson, who directed Scream 7 following decades as the franchise’s founding screenwriter and creative architect, will not return to direct the eighth entry. According to TheWrap, Williamson is instead stepping back into a producer role on the new film.

Outlets including Deadline, TheWrap, ComicBook.com, Nerdist, Just Jared, and Fangoria widely circulated Campbell’s remarks, noting that Sidney Prescott remains the emotional core of the franchise following the record-setting commercial success of the previous movie.

The road from Woodsboro to Scream 8

Campbell originated the role of Sidney Prescott in the original 1996 movie directed by Wes Craven, surviving multiple Ghostface encounters across Scream 2 in 1997, Scream 3 in 2000, Scream 4 in 2011, and the 2022 revival Scream.

She sat out Scream VI in 2023 following a public salary dispute with Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures. However, she returned to center stage for Scream 7, which arrived in movie theaters on February 27, 2026. Directed by Williamson, the seventh installment became a historic commercial hit for the series, grossing more than $208 million worldwide against a production budget of $45 million to set an all-time box-office franchise record.

What we know and what we do not know yet

While Campbell’s involvement is now locked in, several key creative elements for Scream 8 remain unannounced.

The studio has not yet chosen a director to replace Williamson. Online rumors and listings that circulating on Reddit and horror forums suggested directing duo the Soska sisters might be in talks or hired, but those reports remain entirely unconfirmed. Fan forum claims that the movie will feature an international setting or a Christmas backdrop are also unverified.

Paramount and Spyglass have not set a filming start date or an official theatrical release window. It also remains unknown whether fellow Scream 7 cast members, including Courteney Cox, Isabel May, or Joel McHale, will rejoin Campbell for the eighth chapter.
