Five weeks into the live broadcasts of Strictly Come Dancing 2026, the BBC’s new three-presenter setup has divided viewers, former cast members and television insiders. The corporation stepped in on Sunday, October 25, to dismiss reports of an impending shakeup, calling claims that bosses plan to replace presenters after one run unfounded.

Broadcaster Emma Willis, comedian Josh Widdicombe and professional dancer Johannes Radebe stepped into the ballroom together on September 19, following the departure of long-time co-hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman. The duo officially stepped down after the December 2025 final. Now, with live shows running since September 26, the reimagined format has become the center of this week’s television debate.

The criticism: pacing and an unfamiliar dynamic

The transition away from Daly and Winkleman has faced pushback from viewers who miss the familiar two-person dynamic. On social media, audience members cited by Cambridge News and the Daily Mirror criticized Widdicombe’s comedic timing and argued that dividing duties between the main dance floor and the upstairs gallery feels crowded.

Former professional dancer Brendan Cole, who appeared on the series from 2004 to 2017, voiced reservations during an appearance on Jeremy Vine reported by AOL. Cole said he was not enjoying the setup and questioned whether Widdicombe suited the environment.

Anonymous production sources quoted by the Daily Mail and cited by the Daily Express also voiced frustration, with one saying, “It isn’t working. Strictly isn’t really for him; he probably knows that.” Another claimed, “That view stands, it doesn’t work. Not only have many of the traditional viewers stopped watching, the show has become the butt of jokes, a laughing stock.”

The defense: fresh energy and ballroom expertise

Supporters of the trio point to the blend of Willis’s seasoned live presenting, Radebe’s deep ballroom background and Widdicombe’s dry humor as a welcome evolution. Head judge Shirley Ballas mounted a public defense on October 19, telling the Lancashire Telegraph that the new team made the show feel “fresh.”

“He is humorous. He is a gentleman. He is kind and I think he’s brilliant at his job,” Ballas said of Widdicombe.

The presenters themselves have largely brushed off the noise. On September 30, Widdicombe joked about audience resistance to change on the Parenting Hell podcast, saying he was sure everything would be fine because people on the internet take new information well and are happy with change at all times.

Willis expressed her enthusiasm on Instagram following the premiere: “Week one, done. I’ve never had so much fun! What a way to kick things off.” Her husband, musician Matt Willis, also backed her on ITV’s This Morning, stating she was “smashing it” and very happy in the ballroom.

What we know and what we do not know

Responding to tabloid reports of dissatisfaction behind the scenes, a BBC spokesperson told the Daily Express: “This is pure and utter speculation.” The network confirmed that claims of replacing hosts after one series are unfounded.

What remains unconfirmed is whether producers will adjust how presenting duties are split between the ballroom floor and the upstairs studio as series 24 continues. Any formal decisions regarding contracts for the 2027 series will not arrive until after the current series wraps in December 2026.

Does the new trio simply need more time to establish their rhythm, or was the original two-host format what made the show work best? Which side are you on?
