The American Film Institute has selected Tom Cruise as the recipient of the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award, the organization’s Board of Trustees announced on Wednesday, October 21. The honor recognizes his work across more than four decades as an actor and producer.

Cruise will receive the prize during a tribute gala scheduled for April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Proceeds from the gala will support the institute’s arts and education initiatives, according to the American Film Institute, as reported by The Washington Post.

Kathleen Kennedy praises his dedication to movies

Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, highlighted Cruise’s global impact and passion for the theatrical experience when confirming the award.

“Tom Cruise is a global icon. As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does,” Kennedy said in a statement reported by TheWrap.

Kennedy continued: “What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together. That passion has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world. It is AFI’s honor to present him with the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award.”

A history of industry honors

The AFI Life Achievement Award was established in 1973 to celebrate individuals whose talent has fundamentally advanced film art and stood the test of time. Cruise succeeds Eddie Murphy, who was honored as the 51st recipient at the Dolby Theatre on April 18, 2026.

Over his career, Cruise has secured four Academy Award nominations. He earned Best Actor nods for “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Jerry Maguire,” a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “Magnolia,” and a Best Picture nomination in 2023 as a producer of “Top Gun: Maverick.” In 2025, Cruise also received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards.

What we know about the ceremony

The April 2027 event will place Cruise at the center of a traditional evening honoring his filmography and collaborative history.

Details regarding the gala remain in early stages. AFI has not yet announced the lineup of guest speakers, presenters and performers participating in the celebration, nor has it named a broadcast or streaming partner to air the special.
