Stephanie March Law & Order SVU return brings Cabot back but hides the plot
The beloved prosecutor steps back into the squad room for season 28, but producers have yet to confirm if her visit will extend beyond a single chapter.
Stephanie March is heading back to the courtroom, signing on to reprise her role as Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot in season 28 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Multiple trade publications, including The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, confirmed on Friday, October 23, that the actress will appear in the ninth episode of the season.
Her return marks March’s first appearance on the procedural in eight years, following her guest spot in season 19 in 2018. According to reports from TV Insider and Bleeding Cool, the upcoming chapter will serve as March’s 98th episode appearance across the long-running series. The specific storyline details and circumstances explaining Cabot’s return to the precinct are currently being kept strictly under wraps by NBC and the production team.
Alexandra Cabot’s franchise history
March first stepped into the role of Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot during the season 2 premiere in 2000, titled “Wrong Is Right.” She remained a series regular until season 5 in 2003, when Cabot entered witness protection after surviving an assassination attempt orchestrated by a cartel.
March later returned for recurring guest appearances across season 6 in 2005, season 10 in 2009, season 11 from 2009 to 2010, and season 13 from 2011 to 2012. She also led the 2006 spin-off legal drama Conviction as Cabot.
Viewers last saw Cabot in the season 19 episode titled “Sunk Cost Fallacy” in 2018, which revealed she had walked away from the district attorney’s office to assist victims of domestic violence outside the formal legal system. Speaking about the character on Today in 2018, as re-reported by TV Insider, March shared, “There’s no downside to play a role I’ve always loved.”
A milestone season for SVU
March’s guest spot comes during a landmark year for the procedural. Christopher Meloni, who reprised his role as Detective Elliot Stabler in 2021, is set to return to the squad room for the show’s 600th episode in episode 5, four episodes ahead of March’s arrival in episode 9.
Speaking to TV Insider about reaching the 600-episode milestone during season 28, showrunner Michele Fazekas said, “It’s going to be the show. It’s going to be our characters and going back to the heart of the show and what it is,”
Reports from TVLine and Bleeding Cool noted strong audience anticipation across online comments and social media following Friday’s announcement. Co-stars, including lead actress Mariska Hargitay, who stars as Captain Olivia Benson in 2026, had not released official statements at the time of publication.
What we know and what comes next
While March’s appearance in episode 9 is confirmed, questions remain regarding the broadcast schedule and Cabot’s future on the series. The Wrap reported that episode 9 is scheduled to air on December 3, 2026, though The Hollywood Reporter noted on October 23 that an official airdate had not yet been finalized on NBC’s schedule.
The creative team has also not disclosed what storyline reunites Cabot with the squad, nor whether March’s appearance will remain a single-episode guest spot or expand into a recurring arc later in season 28.
